Steven Weersing—- David Weersing and Carissa Crowe live in Joplin, Missouri. They have two sons, 14-year-old Nathan, and 16-year-old Steven. Nathan is a friendly kid, while Steven, on the other hand, is more rebellious. Even though David and Carissa are divorced, they still continue to be active in their kid's lives. Carissa was doing some yard work one day when the weather started to get worse, so she went inside her home. Casually, she decided to watch the news and said that there was a tornado moving in the area, so she tried to get ahold of Nathan and Steven because the weather conditions were getting worse and she was worried if they were okay, but they haven't reached back, and Carissa started to get worried, so she called David, and he said that Nathan is safe but he hasn't heard from Steven. So David texts Steven and warns him that a tornado is on its way, but he hasn't responded, and he's hoping that he's okay. The area where Steven was hit by the Tornado the worst, The tornado was so bad that it literally tore down half of the town, killing 157 people. Meanwhile, David is worried because he hasn't heard from Steven, so he drives to the local hospital. The hospital was packed with patients, and David couldn't find Steven, so he asked everyone around if he'd seen his son, so he asked a surgeon where his son was (he explained his characteristics, such as the tattoo on his arm), and she immediately takes David to Steven's room. Steven was unconscious and had a 15-inch trauma wound to his chest, but he was miraculously still alive. David calls Carissa and rushes to the hospital; Carissa is relieved that he's alive. For three days, Carissa and David stay by Steven's side as they wait for his wounds to heal, and Steven is almost on his full way to recovery. Steven's bruises and injuries were starting to heal, and David and Carissa had high hopes that Steven would be okay. But two days later, Carissa notices a strange change to his wound, His hands, and his feet were really swollen, and she wonders why this could be happening if his wounds were getting better, and the doctors thought that it had to do with an infection in his body. So doctors prescribe antibiotics, but there is no improvement after three days. In fact, doctors said he was beginning to look worse, and his body continued to swell and his blood pressure was rising. The doctors didn't seem to know what was wrong with him. Doctors could not find any answers to his infection, so they airlifted him 150 miles to Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City.

Steven was treated by pediatric infectious disease specialist Dr. Mary Ann Jackson, and immediately she figured out that there was something strange about his trauma wounds. Dr Mary Ann Jackson said that Steven had a large gaping wound on the right side of his chest that was extensively covered in black material as his skin tissues were quickly dying, But the wound was infected by an unusual organism, so she and her team rushed Steven into the OR, where they removed all the dead tissue that they could, but even then they still had trouble removing all the dead tissue since it kept coming back. The tissue on his skin was deteriorating rapidly. So she and her team knew that Steven still needed countless surgeries. Dr Jackson sends samples of his tissues to the lab for testing. while his parents continue to be there by his side. But two days later, they wheeled him into surgery again, and this time, they found something shocking. It shocked the team so much that even Dr. Jackson herself was baffled. The OR team discovered extensive black mold growth on his ribs and tissues. The wound kept progressing, so they had to remove more dead tissue, The tissue damage was getting so bad that his ribcage was peaking out of his chest. The next surgery on his infected wounds still couldn't heal, and that's when the doctors were in a really dire situation. Dr. Jackson diagnosed him with Zygomycosis, a fungus that entered his body cavity, halting blood flow, causing the surrounding tissues to rot, and rapidly reproducing inside, infecting his skin tissue, rib bones, and vital organs. The infection that he was dealing with had an 80% percent death rate, and the chances of survival were very small. She breaks the news to his parents that he may not survive. So Dr Jackson puts Steven on anti-fungal drugs, which have little effect as the fungus continues to grow and resists the medication.

So as a last resort, Dr. Jackson and her team did a very extreme procedure that involved removing part of the heart, liver, lungs, and ribs. Steven's life was on the line, as he continues to be on a ventilator. Dr Jackson still didn't think that Steven would survive this as part of his lug inflated. His wounds became so severely decayed that even his father said he looked like hamburger meat.

Seven weeks after he was diagnosed with a total of over 15 surgeries, the fungus spores on his chest were disappearing, and he was now reacting well to the anti-fungal medication well. And a week later, Steven opened his eyes and spoke as he gradually woke up on his own. He survived the ordeal and recovered well. His family and doctors were happy to see him wake up. Steven contracted the infection in a car crash, Suffering multiple injuries, the strong winds picked up the fungus and got into his trauma wounds. Five months later, Steven is finally discharged. Steven has a large scar on his chest as a result of zygomycosis. Steven still receives reconstructive surgery. Steven, now 19, has a girlfriend named Tara and a daughter named Briella May.
